Most of us get tons of book recommendations and even gifts.
I'm a huge advocate of recommending/gifting books, as I write in my own book. The only problem here is that, for most of us, our reading lists are already so long. So, we should consider putting a few rules into play.
- Only recommend/gift a book if you are an avid reader yourself - If you read regularly, then you reserve the right to share some of your favorites with people because you are a seasoned reader, which enables you to distinguish a good book from a bad one. On the flip side, if you read just one book and think it's the greatest thing ever because you have nothing to compare it to, you probably shouldn't thrust your opinions on to others saying, "you have to read this." You aren't a seasoned reader, and you cannot yet distinguish a good book from a bad one.
- Do not gift someone with a book you have not read and enjoyed yourself. When you share a book that you read and enjoyed, you come across as a person of good taste and generosity. However, when you blindly recommend a book you have not read it comes across as you just fulfilling an obligation to give a gift, or even careless.
