Neuro-Linguistic Programming - an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States in the 1970s. NLP's creators claim there is a connection between neurological processes (neuro-), language (linguistic) and behavioral patterns learned through experience (programming), and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life.

Double binds - Double binds create a conversational illusion of choice. To use a double bind, present to options to subjects, both of which lead to the results you want. Either decision they make will have the same result. Here are a few:

  • Would you rather _____, or is it better to just _____? (my personal favorite to use)
  • Do you feel more _____ or _____?
  • While you're _____, would you rather _____ or _____?

Embedded commands - Phrases hidden within normal language. Through strategically placed words, small changes in tone and volume, pauses, and gestural references, embedded commands can be woven into the innermost parts of conversation without any conscious awareness on the subjects' part. Embedded commands consist of a vehicle, a command, and a continuum. Simply put, they are just commands within a sentence. For example:

  • A person can ... feel completely focused ... when he or she finds something interesting.
  • It's easy to ... become curious ... when something really piques your interest.
